Turbo App
Roadtrip Organizer

Case Study

Background

Each year, about a hundred million Americans take to the road for their vacations. Such roadtrips involve a lot of planning to maximize  enjoyment as well as safety and security of persons, vehicles, and homes. However, the best laid plans often go awry, and a change of plans due to inclement weather may impact other vacation plans in a domino-like effect.

The app proposes to store and present roadtrip vacation information, plans, and itineraries in adaptive ways that maximize safety and enjoyment. It aims to solve the problem of information, task, and activity management in preparation for, during, and after a roadtrip vacation. Information, activities, and tasks concern both the trip itself, the car, the trip destinations(s), as well as the home.

Problems

• Roadtrip travelers have concerns with safety, security, or enjoyment of:
o Home - e.g. house sitter, pet sitter.
o Vehicle - e.g. gas fill up, maintenance & operating issues.
o Journey - e.g. food, water, gas, bathrooms, entertainment, road safety.
      o Destination - e.g. weather, inclement conditions, business hours/closures.
• Roadtrip travelers need and desire functions and services that would assist them in preparing, organizing, and managing roadtrips in real
time in order to maximize the enjoyment, security, and safety of their home, vehicle, journey, and destination activities.

Research and Development

Goals

• Identify the goals and concerns of roadtrip travelers regarding:
      o Home
      o Vehicle
      o Journey
      o Destination
• Identify functions and services that would assist roadtrip travelers in maximizing enjoyment, security, and safety of the home, vehicle, journey, and destination.
• Research competitor apps with similar functionalities.

Methodologies
Interviews

Four participants were interviewed for 30-minute question and answer sessions. Each interviewee has been on roadtrips that they have organized themselves. (Interview impressions are interspersed throughout this page.)

All four interviewees voiced concerns about the home, vehicle, journey, and destinations while on roadtrips.

Competitive Analysis

User Persona

Goals

Affinity Map: Usability Testing with a Prototype

Participants were concerned about abiding by itineraries, and wished an app would help with
time budgeting and adjustment of itineraries based on real time factors, such as weather and traffic.

Information
Architecture

Interviewees want an app to store information about travel destinations
and facilities, such as business hours, addresses, reservations, confirmations, etc.

Wireframes

It was important for three of the interviewees that the app makes available offline documents, maps,
confirmations, agreements, day passes, etc. because of spotty cellular service in certain travel regions.

Mobile Designs

One interviewee wanted an app that would allow her to input copious notes because she had
various concerns at different travel points, such as "last gas station for the next 100 miles."
One interviewee desired an app that would allow her to create a list of
last-minute to-do's right before departure instead of writing them on a white board.
