Meditation is a tool many people to use to produce a deep state of relaxation and peaceful state of mind, and to reduce stress, balance emotions, increase focus, creativity, and memory, and reduce pain, anxiety and depression. And according to Apple, mindfulness apps, including meditation apps, were the number one app trend in 2018. Calm is a billion dollar company founded as a startup in 2012 by Tew and Smith, with iOS as the most profitable mobile platform.
As with other lifestyle changes, meditators become disappointed with the results if they don’t have immediate gratification or have too many unrealistic expectations. One way to combat drop-offs is the use of social support or small groups to promote long-term behavior change – with meditation being a practice that requires long-term commitment for gains. This proposal is consistent with small groups having been used to promote personal change and improve health, according to a study.
