AMI National Animal Adoption Site

Case Study

Background

Each year, around 6.5 million domestic animals enter U.S. animal shelters, but only 3.2 million of them are adopted, as 1.5 million shelter animals (670,000 dogs and 860,000cats) are euthanized. Animal Mission Inc. (AMI) wants to change this statistic by creating a national platform where available animals from any shelter, near or distant, are seen. This would require a partnership with shelters across the country to help people find animals and learn more about animal shelters.

Problems

· Lack of regional and national visibility of animal shelters and rescues.
· Potential animal adopters need an efficient "one stop" site to perform customized searches for animals in or outside their region.
· Animal shelters and rescues need to raise the visibility of animals, especially those about to destroyed.

Methodologies
Interviews

Four participants were interviewed for 30-minute question and answer sessions: Two participants are animal parents who have adopted animals through shelters. The other two participants are animal shelter/rescue administrators. (Interview impressions are interspersed throughout this page.)

"It is important that a shelter/rescue animal is within a reasonable distance [from me]."

User Persona

Goals

Affinity Map: Usability Testing with a Prototype

When looking for a rescue pet, I look for location, dog, size, age, gender, neutered or not, color, breed, history, temperament, hair length, energy level, compatibility with other dogs, people, children, adoption fees, qualifying factors for adoption, photo, video, health status, vet care history (e.g. shots, neutered status).

Information
Architecture

A national standardized application is not a good idea because applications should be
individualized to each shelter because each region has a different climate, warranting
different requirements, such as whether pets are to be kept outside or not.

Wireframes

An animal shelter administrator said that she would want an "urgent" caption
used for animals that are to be euthanized and maybe time stamped.

Desktop Designs

Some important information for potential adoptees to know are about the pet,
the shelter, the adoption process, fees, application, same day adoption or
not, time needed to process, adoption counseling, and children/pet compatibility.

Mobile Designs

An animal parent is thinking of getting another cat and so he would need
to know whether a shelter cat is compatible with other cats.
